Thanks for creating this. But as a novice I have absolutely no idea how to go about using ADFFS. I read through the how to install and use thread but I'm none the wiser, being lost on:

1. What's an "older machine"? I'm running Arculator 0.9 using RiscOS 3 at the moment.

2. SparkFS page casually says "Having downloaded the version of SparkFS place it on the harddisc of your Acorn computer/emulator." which I have no clue how to do.

3. The imaging instructions are pretty much going over my head too.

I think you're not allowed to distribute .adf file versions of games (from your note at the bottom of the imaging thread), so I don't think I'll be able to get these extra tracks working (unless someone can quietly PM me with a converted version).

This all seems rather complicated, unless you're big into Archimedes (I only used it a little bit in school computer lessons in the early 1990s!).

Plus as you said on stardot it might be copy protected and won't work as ADF anyway

Ah, the pain! I know what you mean - there is a lot of fiddling required to get these emulators and older machines up-to-spec.

I'd split it into two. First job is to get SparkFS (or SparkPlug) working on your Arculator install. Can you download the self-extracting version of either using your Windows web browser, and place it into the ArculFS/HostFS directory within Arculator? You should then be able to see the self-extractor from within RISC OS. Run that, and you'll get SparkFS/SparkPlug running.

I've not tried ADFFS on an Archimedes-class machine: real or emulated, but I'd imagine you would benefit from selecting 8 MB RAM in the emulator options. Download ADFFS from here, and place that into the ArculFS/HostFS directory. Use SparkFS/SparkPlug to extract it. Do the same for the game disk images from here.

Then you run ADFFS, double-click the Saloon Cars image (equivalent to inserting the floppy disc) and then choose 'Boot Floppy'. Or something like that, anyway!

If you have a Raspberry Pi knocking about, I'd recommend that. I'm not sure if Arculator is precise enough to run ADFFS and these games.

Thanks. I'll have to suss it out as I like how this old game manages to replicate the real life tracks.

The game itself (deluxe) works on Arculator, I'm only playing it from an adf disk copy someone shared on a forum though. I believe the game can load an adf of the extra courses but only the jfd file exists.

As a novice/beginner, you're probably going to struggle as you need a properly configured RISC OS within Arculator for SparkFS to work. The steps are along the lines of:
  1. (PC) Download the three JFD floppy images for Saloon Cars Deluxe
  2. (PC) Rename them to "F1031901,fce" / "F1031902,fce" / "F1031903,fce" and move them to Arculator\hostfs
  3. (PC) Download the self-extracting SparkFS from here
  4. (PC) Rename it to "SparkFS,ffc" Copy it to Arculator\hostfs
  5. (PC) Download the latest ADFFS and copy it to Arculator\hostfs
  6. (PC) Start Arculator. I'd suggest an A310 with 8MB and a 35MHz ARM3 to speed it up
  7. Open HostFS
  8. Double-click SparkFS to run it, which will extract as !SparkFS
  9. Double-click !SparkFS to run it. If you get an error about System resources or "CallASWI" missing, you'll need to install a !Boot folder (ie a Boot Sequence needs to exist in the root of HostFS):
    1. Delete !SparkFS and restart the emulator
    2. (PC)Download UniBoot2, rename it to "UniBoot2,ddc" and move it to Arculator\HostFS
    3. (PC)Download SparkPlug, rename it to "splug226,ffb" and move it to Arculator\HostFS
    4. Double-click splug226 to run it
    5. Double-click UniBoot2 to open and extract !Boot to the root of HostFS
    6. Press F12
    7. Type "Configure Boot" followed by ENTER
    8. Type "Configure FileSystem HostFS" followed by ENTER
    9. Type "HostFS" followed by ENTER
    10. Type "OPT 4,3" followed by ENTER
    11. Reboot the emulator
    12. Double-click SparkFS to run/re-extract !SparkFS. If you get an error about "System missing", hold SHIFT and double-click on !SparkPlug, hold SHIFT and double-click on !Run. Delete the line that reports the error
    13. Hopefully !SparkFS will now run correctly
    14. You can now delete !SparkPlug
  10. Middle-click on ADFFSxxx/zip. Drill down to "File '...' \ Set type \" and type "Zip", press ENTER to apply the change
  11. Double-click ADFFSxxx to open the archive
  12. Drag !ADFFS to the root of HostFS
  13. Double-click !ADFFS to run it
  14. Double-click on F1031901 and run !Install. Install the game to the root of hostfs. Use CTRL-SHIFT-F2/F3 to switch to disc 2/3 when prompted
  15. Hold SHIFT and double-click !Saloon to open the folder
  16. Hold SHIFT and double-click !Run to edit it. Replace everything in it with:
    ADFBootFloppy F1031901
  17. Press F3 and click OK to save the change
  18. (PC) Download the Saloon Cars Deluxe Extra Tracks JFD floppy image
  19. (PC) Rename it to "F1033201,fce" and move it to Arculator\hostfs\!Saloon
You can now run !Saloon and select Course Menu \ Read Course Disc to get to the extra tracks.

It worked up until point 9,4 "Double-click UniBoot2 to open and extract !Boot to the root of HostFS"

When I double-click UniBoot2 it says "Error: System resources cannot be found" - same issue I had when trying to run !SparkFS, hence me going down the point 9 sub-list.

Have I maybe configured Arculator (2.2 now) wrong? I've got:
CPU: ARM 3 @ 35MHz
FPU: None
Memory: 8 MB
MEMC: MEMC1a (8 MHz)
OS: RISC OS 3.11
Monitor: Multisync

Or do I maybe need to set up a hard disk first?

Delete !SparkFS and restart the emulator, re-extract it once you have !Boot in place.

I deleted !SparkFS from the hostfs folder

Ensured UniBoot2,ddc was in the hostfs.

Double-click and now get: File 'HostFS::HostFS.$.!SparkFS.!Run' not found.

And I thought PCs were complicated :-p

Can anyone help? Feels like I'm getting closer.

Is there another way to create the !Boot
