ADFFS 2.86 public beta

Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
This worked - the file I deleted, and waited 10 seconds for before booting was gone when I rebooted. There was no hourglass though during those 10 seconds.JonAbbott wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 Take a copy of the JFD, mount it, delete one of the files...wait 10 seconds, reboot, remount the JFD and see if the file has gone.
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
It would probably have been quick enough for the Hourglass to not appear. Watch the file in a Filer window and you should see the timestamp change after it's flushed the write back.wmd wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 This worked - the file I deleted, and waited 10 seconds for before booting was gone when I rebooted. It sounds like ZLib can't allocate enough RMA to perform the compression when in-game. I'm not sure how much RMA it actually requires, but watching the RMA size during an *ADFSave, ZLib increased it by 384KB, so try manually increasing the RMA by 400KB before booting the floppy. I'm not convinced that will fix it, but it's worth testing.
Also update ADFFS from the OP. Whilst trying to reproduce this, I noticed ZLib was leaking RMA - which would not have helped here.
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
I set Module area to 1200K before booting the game but saving still not working in Arcade 3 (using the ADFFS build you just uploaded).
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
I can't think what else it would be, other than an RMA allocation issue. It's odd I can't reproduce the problem.
Is the JFD on ADFS::4 ?
I do need to look at reserving memory for compression, as relying on the RMA is problematic with some games. I could also look at falling back to uncompressed as a last resort if it can't allocate enough for compression.

Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
See if the attached works, I've tweaked the compression settings to reduce the RMA memory required to below 32KB.wmd wrote: Tue Jan 28, 2025 I set Module area to 1200K before booting the game but saving still not working in Arcade 3 (using the ADFFS build you just uploaded).
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
Just tested, and still no dice. Hourglass didn't appear after 3 seconds of entering high score and there was no visible hard drive activity (no HDD LED flashing).
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
I'll probably need to add some debug output to figure out what's happening.
Re: ADFFS 2.86 public beta
Please try the attached. It will set screen border colour at various stages, let me know what colour it ends up at so I have a rough idea of where the issue is.wmd wrote: Wed Jan 29, 2025 Just tested, and still no dice. The colour sequence is:
Dark red - disc write occurred
Bright red - write-back to JFD requested (should occur 3s after dark red)
Orange - write-back to JFD scheduled
Dark green - write-back started
Magenta - an error occurred
Bright green - write-back successful
