ADFFS 2.86

Post by JonAbbott »

This update adds HFE support, missing sector creation, JFD/ADF auto-flush and the ability to write an unprotected floppy image back to a physical floppy.

To improve the speed and reduce the memory required by ZLib on ARM2/3, Save and Flush now use lower compression, requiring ~32KB of RMA. RiscPC and newer use max compression, which requires ~400KB of RMA.

Auto-flush
Auto-flush will write-back changes to a mounted JFD image file, 3 seconds after the last write. To work, JFD must be imaged with 2.86 (or resaved via Save as), and Auto flush enabled when the floppy was imaged, as shown in the image below (or forced via *ADFFlush On):

Image

Auto-flush works by appending all delta changes to the end of the JFD file. For example a JFD that's had 8KB written to it will compress and append the modified 8KB at each flush. As Auto-flush JFD's are primarily for game saves, a flush will usually only consist of a few sectors worth of data.
Although its not yet implemented, it's also possible to rollback a JFD to its original state.

If a flush fails due to lack of RMA or a disc/compression error, it will fail silently.

Packed games available via PackMan have been updated where necessary; downloadable archives will be updated in due course.

Missing sector creation
When a JFD is created via a recording file, it only images the sectors that are touched by the game. That leaves gaps across the disc, which to date would trigger a "missing sector" error if read/written.

Missing sectors are now added when they're read/written, flagging them as delta changes so they're auto-flushed back to the JFD if appropriate. To avoid unnecessary sector creation when performing a Verify, a valid response will be given but the sector will not be added.

To ensure backward compatibility, JFD not created using ADFFS 2.86 will continue to generate the "missing sector" and will not add missing sectors. Some games will not work if the JFD is updated to 2.86 via Save As and will need reimaging to capture unformatted protection sectors.

HFE support
HFEv1/v2 and v3 files are supported, although v2/v3 files with fuzzy bits will not work correctly due to the way the HFE is passed through a 1772 emulator as the file is read in.

De-duped recording files
The recording files bundled wilt ADFFS have now been de-duped and consecutive reads merged to reduce the recording size. Where the resulting recording file ended up imaging the whole floppy and had no protection sectors, the recording file has been removed - the imager will fall-back to full disc imaging.

Reads that don't match the disc's standard layout are now flagged as known protection sectors, primarily to avoid showing protection as "bad". If a track shows as bad when imaging, the image should be considered bad.

Write to ADFS::0
This will write the mounted image to a physical floppy. Disk protection will not be written, so this is only useful for unprotected floppies.

A-series requirements:
  • 4MB RAM minimum
  • RISC OS 3.10 or newer
  • ADFFS must be installed to a hard-drive
RiscPC requirements:
  • 32MB RAM minimum
  • RISC OS 3.x, 4.x or 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer. Note that some games will not work on RISC OS 4.x due to the way it allocates screen memory in 1MB blocks. RISC OS 6 is not officially supported
Titanium requirements
  • RISC OS 5.30 or newer
  • If the OS drive is on ADFS, you may receive an error when loading !ADFFS about open files. The only workaround is to edit !ADFFS.!Loader and add Close as the 1st line of the file. This will forcibly close all open files, so use at your own risk and don't run !ADFFS if any apps are running.
Iyonix requirements
  • RISC OS 5.27 Nov 16th 2018 or newer (download link)
  • To get legacy TV MODEs working (0 to 15), you can try this Monitor file for 75Hz EGA on VGA
    EGAonVGAMonitor.zip
Pi requirements:
  • Any revision Pi, from Pi 1 to Pi 4, including Pi Zero
  • RISC OS 5.30 or newer (download link)
  • Ensure fake_vsync_isr=1 is uncommented in !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT
  • (optional) For a blocky pixel retro gaming look, turn off the default GPU filtered upscaling by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and add the following lines:

    Code: Select all

#set GPU upscaling to nearest neighbour
    scaling_kernel=8
  • (optional) If your display supports 50Hz, you can force the Pi to use 50Hz by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and adding the following lines. Uncomment one of the hdmi_mode values:

    Code: Select all

    hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
    #
    hdmi_group=1
    #576p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=17
    #
    #720p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=19
    #
    #1080p @ 50Hz
    hdmi_mode=31
At other monitor frequencies, games will still run at the correct rate but micro stutter may be noticeable where extra frames are added to make up the difference

Known issues
  • Does not support the protection used by Chequered Flag (RO2 version) when running on RISC OS 3.1x (talks directly to the FDC via IOC)
  • Shelling out of the desktop (Ctrl-Shift-F12 twice) hangs under RedSquirrel if an HD floppy is mounted on RO3.5+ ARM710
  • OMAP based cores are not supported. When changing to a legacy mode, the system will hard-lock on a black screen
  • Some games that use overscan may result in a blank screen on a RiscPC
  • 26bit WIMP app support under RISC OS 5 can randomly lock the machine (related to a feature of RISC OS, which doesn't preserve memory page access across task switches)
  • Hardware scrolling is still in effect when returning from an emulated legacy mode, to the desktop under RISC OS 5
  • When switching between an emulated mode and the desktop, logical memory space is leaked eventually resulting in logical memory exhaustion. Refer to this ROOL discussion for further details
  • JIT will not work under RPCEmu as it does not generate Page Faults when User mode writes to pages with Supervisor only write permissions
  • Red Squirrel will crash when mounting a floppy image, if emulating an IOC machine with 16MB of RAM
  • CTRL-SHIFT-F12 will not terminate the following games, which run natively (this is the ARMv5+ list, many more games run native on IOMD):
    • Botkiller
    • Exodus
    • Freddy's Folly
    • Giant Killer
    • Gloop (from Logic Mania)
    • MicroDrive 32M
    • Minotaur
    • SunBurst
    • TwinWorld
    • Wolfenstein 3D
    • Zool - Ninja of the 'Nth' Dimension
  • Games that alter the Wimp Mode might cause a hard-lock when exiting back to the Wimp. This appears to be an external issue when the Wimp can't handle the MODE (this might be resolved - needs testing). Titles need patching to not alter the Wimp Mode:
    • Cyborg / Adventure
    • Dreadnoughts
    • Guile
    • Put It!
    • Wizard Apprentice
  • WIMP based titles may randomly lock the machine and must not be terminated via CTRL-SHIFT-F12:
    • Abuse
    • Alderbaran (not currently working - hard-locks the system)
    • Black Angel
    • Demon's Lair
    • E-Type II
    • Elite
    • Emotions - Search for Humanity
    • EuroBlaster (from Flying High)
    • Fervour
    • Foray
    • Formula Two Thousand
    • Frak!
    • Global Effect
    • Hamsters (ADFFS removes the Wimp front-end as a workaround)
    • Haunted House
    • High Risc Racing
    • Ixion
    • Joust (from Flying High)
    • Karma - The Flight Trainer
    • K.V.
    • Mah-Jong Patience
    • Merp (from Mirror Image and Merp)
    • Premier Manager
    • Scrabble
    • Shuggy
    • SimCity
    • TANKS
    • The Chaos Engine
    • Virtual Golf
    • WaveLength
  • Dominate - has corruption on the wipeout screen, which is corruption on the original floppy. Need to source another copy to re-image
  • Formula Fun - doesn't hide the text cursor and doesn't wait on the track map screen
  • Frak! - music is glitchy and the game has a screensaver, which you can't get out of without hitting ESC
  • Hostages - Music might be wrong. Check against a physical RO2, ARM2 based machine
  • James Pond 2: Robocod (original release) - music key is wrong. Also happens on physical, might be related to a RISC OS update or Module version
  • Caverns does not scroll correctly on a RiscPC with VRAM fitted
  • Caverns does not display the high-score/ship on a RiscPC running RISC OS 5
  • Rotor does not work on a RiscPC
  • Games that rely on specific video timings or geometry to palette swap or set the Pointer position may not be correct on IOC with LCDGameModes enabled or IOMD based machines
  • Sound is currently very jittery on a RiscPC with a StrongARM fitted, when the JIT is performing cache maintenance. For example when a game starts up or is using self-modifying code
  • Using CTRL-SHIFT-F12 to terminate a game on IOMD can result in the Desktop inadvertently shutting down
  • The following games crash when installed to long paths:
    • Abuse
    • Wonderland
  • BCMVideo overlay's can sometime take several minutes to appear. Refer to this thread on the ROOL forum
  • The ROOL and ROD Wi-Fi stacks cause SDIODriver to get into a spin-lock when the Wimp is threaded out (ie playing a full-screen game). The current workaround is to terminate their respective WiFi Module before playing any games. For the ROOL stack that can be done via *RMKill WLanBWFM from F12
  • Will cause a hard-lock when loaded on a Pinebook Pro. I'm working with R-Comp to get this resolved.
  • The video driver on the Pinebook and Pinebook Pro is not complete enough to support ADFFS. Once the above issue is resolved, I'm going to look at writing a new video driver for the Pinebook Pro.
  • If a WiFi stack is loaded (ROD or ROOL), SDIODriver will randomly get stuck in a race condition. This has been reported, but the root cause has yet to be identified
  • Audio is glitchy when the blitter is active, which is noticeable on a Pi when in MODE 32 (eg Wizards Apprentice)
  • Audio can be glitchy on a RiscPC SA 26bit
  • F1003801 Battle Chess (1993) (Krisalis Software) - slow on StrongARM
  • F1006501 Cannon Fodder (1994) (Krisalis Software) - goes into an unsupported video mode on RiscPC
  • F1060201 Chuck Rock [SA version] (2001) (R-Comp Interactive) - display is wrong when run on a RiscPC
  • F1015401 Fire & Ice (1995) (Warner Interactive Entertainment) - copperbar timing is incorrect on RiscPC, causing screen flickering
  • F1054501 Gods [RPC version] (2001) (R-Comp Interactive) - no sound effects and goes into an unsupported video mode on RiscPC
  • R-Comp RPC/SA versions of games mostly rely on Mode definition files to work and return to the desktop in the game mode. eg. James Pond, Chuck Rock, Gods etc
  • F1059801 Lemmings 2: The Tribes [SA version] (2001) (R-Comp Interactive) - music slows down in places on a RiscPC
  • Overlay builds trigger a spinlock in SDIODriver and BCMSupport on the Pi (ROOL post here)
  • Champions: Jahangir Khan World Championship Squash (1991) (Krisalis Software) - Joystick doesn't work when Boot Floppy is used on an A3010. The same issue will apply to other games that use JoyMod, which are mostly Krisalis titles (hopefully fixed - I don't have an A3010 to test) (fix implemented, but not confirmed working)
  • Zelanites has no sound on a RiscPC and the sound effects are poor quality on a Pi
  • Drop Ship and Drop Ship [SA} packages fail to run reporting "Line too long" (resolved with the latest package and obey.zip)

Changes since 2.85
  • Debug overlay is now destroyed when the Module exits instead of when the JIT shuts down, to avoid a hard-lock when a JIT Abort occurs
  • Blitter was corrupting the stack if it exited early due to the overlay not existing (fixes Stunt Racer 2000)
  • reduced the minimum overlay size from 32x32 to 4x4
  • OS_ReadDynamicArea was returning an invalid size (fixes Rockfall)
  • If GraphicsV fails to map an overlay, its address is now zero'd so the blitter exits early
  • JIT UpCall 6 is no longer passed onto hypervised tasks
  • JIT IRQ handler wasn't storing IRQ R13 on return from the OS, which may have been reset by RTSupport
  • Updated JFD imager to create JFD's suitable for delta writes
  • Flush wasn't exiting early if the floppy hadn't changed
  • ADFOpen/Mount wasn't reporting ZLib errors
  • OS_Byte 161 now returns with the boot flag set, if the currently mounted floppy is flagged as needing Shift-Break to run
  • Updated ZLib to v0.05
  • Delta writes now implemented
  • Now displays a % Hourglass while saving / flushing
  • Added "Auto flush" to the ADFFS Filer info page
  • Save / Flush will now use "Best Speed" instead of "Best Compression" when saving on ARM2/3 machines
  • Auto flush now performed when swapping or ejecting mounted images
  • Removed restrictions on path/filename lengths by moving the mounted filename to the RMA
  • ADFFS$RecordingPath is no longer supported when creating recordings
  • Early versions of Window Manager may have Aborted when imaging floppies
  • Updated JoyMod to 5.02 and modified it to fallback to Joystick_Read if RTFM isn't detected
  • Added explicit "Sector not found" bit to sector table
  • When flushing a JFD created prior to 2.86 for the first time, it was not clearing the delta change flag from the sector table correctly
  • replaced all DIV routines
  • Removed Debugger as a protected Module
  • ADFCRC with no parameters will now display the last CRC value
  • JFD imager was adding an unnecessary word to the end of the sector table
  • Missing sector behaviour changed (on JFD's created with 2.86):
    - DiscOp 0 (Verify) will return zeroed sector(s) but not add them
    - DiscOp 1 (Read) will add and return zeroed sector(s)
    - DiscOp 2 (write) will add the missing sector(s)
  • When adding a missing track, the extra word the imager was appending to the sector table (pre 9th Feb 2025 builds) caused the tracks sector list to become corrupt
  • Filer now displays Flush and Write-protect status for all filetypes
  • Added a sanity check to the 1772 emulator to ensure sector sizes are <= 8192 bytes (fixes Nosher HFE)
  • Recording files: De-duped and merged consecutive reads in recording files to reduce their size
  • Recording files: Marked reads that don't align with sectors as protection
  • *ScreenSize was failing to reduce the screen memory on IOC
  • Added HFEv1/v2/v3 support (with the caveat that fuzzy bits won't work correctly)
  • Added an HFE version check and suitable error
  • Recording files: Removed all full-disc recordings and corrected the discrec in the fall-back ADFS F recording
  • JFD imager wasn't always showing known protection sectors
  • JFD imager sector de-dupe wasn't preferring protection sectors
  • Added generic ADFS L format to the JFD imager
  • Filer now displays the JFD/HFE structure version
  • Added "Write to ADFS::0"
  • ADF are now auto-flushed
  • Changed a lot of internal variables sizes from word to byte
  • Added ADFFS_Action 3 to temporarily disable missing sector creation
  • Refactored all SWI code to use relative addressing for variables where possible
  • The RISC OS 5/6 compatibility icons were swapped in the Filer display
  • When loading a file it wasn't clearing the header information, which could cause the Filer to misreport the OS/CPU compatibility
  • Adjusted MEMC sound DMA to more closely match physical and it now buffers further ahead to avoid audio glitches (fixes audio in Zelanites)
  • MiscOp will fail to identify a floppy image created with 2.86, when mounted for the first time on RISC OS 3.11 (bug in 2.86l)
  • Fixed an issue in MiscOp that caused disc identification to add unnecessary sectors to a mounted 2.86 JFD image
  • *ADFInsertModule added to make pre-patching Modules easier
  • Moved the Wimp error handler from *ADFMount to *ADFOpen, to avoid Wimp errors being generated when ADFMount is used in a boot script
  • Fixed an issue in OS_ChangeDynamicArea when emulating RO3.5+ (fixes Alone in the Dark) (bug in 2.85c)
  • DiscOp 3 now returns "Record not found" (1772) or "Missing address mark" if track data doesn't exist
  • Disc imager was failing to image DiscOp 3 correctly on 1772 FDC
  • Fixed a stack corruption issue in ADFEmulateFDC, if the parameter wasn't a valid number
  • JFD imager no longer de-dupes sectors flagged as protection (fixes Conqueror and Zarch)

(lite version is for pre RISC OS 3.5 machines only to ease transfer via floppy. No JFD imaging or later OS support files are included)

NOTE: On RISC OS 3.5+ use the PackMan distribution to receive automatic updates. Add the following URL to the PackMan sources:

Code: Select all

https://www.jaspp.org.uk/packages/release

NOTE: You must use "Boot floppy" to run supported games. If you don't, you could end up with a machine that isn't bootable, as some games alter the CMOS. Provided "Boot floppy" is used, ADFFS will prevent games from altering both the CMOS and unplugging modules
DO NOT try to run a game by launching it's Icon - it will almost certainly damage your machine

One very minor thing - in the Image floppy menu, the third entry "Write to ADFS" is slightly cut-off on RISC OS 3.11 as the window panel is not wide enough.

Fixed in the OP, I'll update the packaged ADFFS in due course.

Should ADFFS be able to read ADL images? I keep getting Broken Directory errors with the latest Acorn User subscription disc images recently uploaded to the arcarc site.
