Fixed in the latest Modules, although it will fail if there are files in RAM::0 and the largest free block is smaller than what's required. I'm not sure I can fix that edge case, RAMFS prevents its size being altered if there are files in it.

@Jon, with new modules:
-I got original SR2000 to work in 2MB mode, so it has now menu and in-game music. Good! However, heavy distortion can be hear on the Pi3. With no music, there's no distortion.
-SR2000 SA version shows distortion too, same as original SR2000.
-"The Dungeon" seems perfect. No distortion anymore as previously.

I'd look at the SR2000 music player at this point...

Updated Modules on the dev site. I've made extensive changes to allow for SWI optimization going forward, which has the potential to break stuff. Most of the day has been spent testing and fixing specific edge cases, but its possible I've missed something.

See if it's an issue with the 32bit version of ExSound by making the following changes to the boot script:
  • Comment out the "RMEnsure ExSound..." line near the top
  • Remove "190|M" from the "KEY 0" line near the bottom

@Jon: I did these changes to the boot script, and I still get the same distortions. What a mistery....

I will be doing tests on more games with the new modules.

Has to be interrupt latency, the question is...where?

Does the distortion stop if you hold down the left and right arrow keys, whilst the cursor is in the middle of the screen?

@Jon: No, the arrow keys being pressed don't do anything.

This distortion only happens some times. Music sounds well, then suddenly it's like "tssssk!", sounds well again for a while then "tssk! tssk!", then OK again... and so on. It's not constant. Sometimes I have to be on the menu for a while for it to start happening, sometimes it doesn't start until I am playing the game or letting the demo run...

Another note: after running HD-installed SR2000 (SA version), there's a system error when trying to reboot the OS itself via CTRL+SHIFT+F12. Sometimes there are also files in RAM:. I believe something is not cleared on quit.

Hmm, that doesn't sound like interrupt latency, it sounds like corruption. Do you have a way to record it?

It will leave files in RAM: if you don't quit via the game exit icon. See if you get the OS error if you quit via the exit icon.

@Jon: Here's an audio recording from SR2000 I made with my cellphone (I can't get audacity to record from the jack port on my laptop...).
You can easily tell the distortions happening every few seconds.

Also, no errors on system reset if I quit via the in-game QUIT menu option.

It doesn't sound like its coming from SoundDMA as its a lot louder than the music, it's static, but where its coming from I have no idea.
