ADFFS 2.61 beta

Post by JonAbbott »

A heads up to testers, that I'm working on the next beta. Primarily the focus for this will be localizing BASIC, so the JIT is running a sandboxed copy of the BASIC Module. I've also spotted a few minor IOC emulation issues that are causing at least one game to fail.

Whilst testing today I noticed Rockfall seems to have broken a few releases back, it crashes when you complete the first level, so I'll also look at fixing that.

I've got several development projects on at the minute, so have no idea when it will be available. I started looking at it earlier in the week after imaging Tactic V2 and Saloon Cars and noticing both weren't working under 2.60.

Good to hear you're on the road again, Jon!!
ADFFS keeps me using RISC OS.. a great OS now with awesome games thanks to this project!
I'll be ready to test on weekends!

There's a new build up (/development/32bit/CPU) for the Pi with some fixes and an accompanying obey.zip (/development/obey).

This gets the following games working:

F1023101 Ballarena (1990) (Sisteme)
F1031801 Saloon Cars (1991) (The Fourth Dimension)
F1062901 Tactic (1990) (Eterna)
F1040101 Zalaga (1996) (Pro-Action)

I've fixed the issue that was causing Rockfall to crash and attempted to correctly emulate the IOC IR pin (FLYBK). Although the FLYBK changes stop Tactic and Ballarena from hanging, neither are regulating their speed correctly; so for the time being, I've switched them to use VSync in the boot script.

There's no point doing any testing on this build at this stage, as its only the Eterna games that use FLYBK.

Updated Modules and obey.zip on the dev site, I managed to introduce a major bug into the previous build which this fixes. I've also put up images of the Champions set and added speed regulation to World Class Leaderboard if you would like to test:

F1049001 Champions: Jahangir Khan World Championship Squash (1992) (Krisalis Software)
F1049002 Champions: Manchester United (1992) (Krisalis Software)
F1049004 Champions: World Championship Boxing Manager (1992) (Krisalis Software)
F1049005 Champions: World Class Leaderboard (1992) (Krisalis Software)

Whilst play testing Carnage Inc. I realised the Page Zero access bug fix for dropping objects was causing them to be cloned, I've now fixed this in the updated obey.zip

I've also uploaded updated Modules, which should resolve the issue of BASIC not being reset when terminating some BASIC based games. If you noticed a game wasn't terminating correctly, see if this build resolves the issue.

Localizing BASIC is turning out to be more difficult that I originally perceived. To avoid the need to patch BASIC (the JIT needs to manage CALL and USR calls), a private copy of BASIC needs to run within the JIT environment; easy enough in practice, just make a copy of the BASIC Module into the JIT RMA, rename it and redirect all use of BASIC too it.

Redirecting use of BASIC is easy enough, just intercept OS_Module 2,"BASIC" and point it at the local copy.

The problem comes in getting BASIC to run under the JIT. The current build of BASIC makes use of CPU specific instructions, so that's a non-starter. Ideally we'd want to use the StrongARM (RO3.71) build of BASIC as that's the last platform we're aiming to support, but there's some odd things going on. Drop to GOS and running a game, it works as expected; run it from the WIMP however and it fails miserably.

Another issue I've spotted is the use of unpredictable instructions. BASIC in both RO3.11 and RO3.71 use STMDB R13!, {R0-R14} and LDMIA R13!, {R0-R13, PC}^ neither of which are supported by the JIT.

In short, it's going to take a while before this is ready for testing.

This issue appears to be game specific and due to not changing screen modes before running a BASIC program. I suspect the issue has always been there, but masked, because an Abort that occurs within ROM is proxied and only trigger an actual Abort if the proxied write fails.
JonAbbott wrote:Another issue I've spotted is the use of unpredictable instructions. BASIC in both RO3.11 and RO3.71 use STMDB R13!, {R0-R14} and LDMIA R13!, {R0-R13, PC}^ neither of which are supported by the JIT.
I've manually patched these as there doesn't appear to be any other obvious uses of unpredictable instructions.

I'm going to test more "known BASIC" games over the weekend and see if it's suitable for testing.

Re: ADFFS 2.61 beta

Did some more random game testing yesterday and noticed Bambuzle crashed if run from the desktop if ADFFS loads a local copy of BASIC. Bambuzle was compiled with ABC and contains no BASIC, so there's something odd going on. I don't believe ABC calls any BASIC routines, it's self contained. It's possible BASIC is doing something during its initialisation that's causing some issues.

Unrelated to BASIC, I've also noticed that the title screen in Confusion doesn't appear and the splash screen when starting a level in CyberApe is corrupt with recent RISCOS builds. It looks like something has changed in screen bank numbering, which is causing FX 113,x to select the wrong screen bank.

I've just tested the same RISCOS build on Pi2 and don't see this issue. Previous testing was done on a Pi3 with Dec 14th 2016 firmware.

So it's possibly firmware related, although I can't get the Pi2 to boot with firmware after 2015 to confirm, it simply fails to boot.

There was a change to the GPU firmware in the Aug 2016 firmware, so I'll see if updating RISCOS makes any difference. RISCOS was updated to match the firmware change mid Jan I think.

EDIT: Updating RISCOS resolved the issue

There's a full zip of 2.61d beta on the dev site (/development/32bit/CPU). In addition to using a 26bit version of BASIC from RISCOS 3.71, I've also resolved flickering in games that rely on bespoke MDF's for non standard video resolutions, such as Morph and Bubble Impact.
