RSS/Atom feeds

Post by PaulV »

I've just been looking at the ATOM feeds for the JASPP forums. It seems the "public" feed only get updated every few days despite posts to the forums going on in the meantime.

For instance, at the time of writing on the 16th May, the time stamp on the feed is the 13th of May. If I'm logged in as a user and view the feeds, they're up to date but as a third party reader that cannot log in to the website, the feeds are out of date.

Is there a setting in phpBB to update the update frequency of the public feeds? Or is the public feed using a restricted set of topics?

To answer my own question, it's just the "General" forum.

I didn't even know it had Atom feeds! I can't see any options about update frequency, but have enabled the option below so you can see the restricted Development forum.
Allow HTTP Authentication:
Enables HTTP authentication, which allows users to receive content that is hidden to guest users by adding the auth=http parameter to the feed URL. Please note that some PHP setups require additional changes to the .htaccess file. Instructions can be found in that file.
Let me know if I need to investigate the later bit.

I tested this yesterday, although the site is configured to allow http authentication, I don't think the web server is allowing it. That or the rss software I'm testing with doesn't support authenticated access.

Have you successfully authenticated into the feeds?

No, it's most odd...

At the moment, I can't seem to consume the public feed correctly anyway. I need to check why and get back to you.

I've reconfigured the access and confirmed I can authenticate to the RSS feed via a browser (not IE as it doesn't support the authentication method), to authenticate use the following URL:

https://username:password@forums.jaspp. ... ?auth=http

In preparation of going public, I've also changed all Development forums to be publicly readable, so these can now be accessed without authentication via:

https://forums.jaspp.org.uk/forum/feed.php

Please note, the feed is ATOM not RSS, so you will need a feed reader that supports ATOM before you'll get it. So for example on the iPhone Raindow RSS Reader won't work, but Smart Feed Reader does.

I've tried a few Atom readers on the iPhone, most don't work with this site. Although Smart Feed Reader initially loads the feed, it doesn't subsequently update it. The only app I've got successfully working is xFeed RSS Reader

Somewhat annoying, but there you go.

The Atom feed appears to be blank since restoring the site, I'll investigate later in the week.
