There's a few minor bug fixes and additional games supported with this release. The main addition is a GUI for imaging physical floppies to ADF and imaging physical or mounted floppies to JFD.

ADFFS will now run on low vector RISC OS 5 builds, with the caveat that not all supported games will work when run on a low vector OS.

Most games that include Manual or wheels/chart based protection have had their boot scripts updated so they no longer prompt for the protection.


A305/A301/A410/A440/A540 requirements:
  • 4MB RAM minimum, 12MB RAM maximum
  • RISCOS 3.11
  • ADFFS must be installed to a hard-drive
RiscPC requirements:
  • 32MB RAM minimum
  • RISC OS 3.x, 4.x or 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer. Note that some games will not work on 4.x due to the way it allocates screen memory in 1MB blocks
  • NOTE: Some RISC OS 4 builds (4.39 for example) have an inbuilt version of ZLib which contains a compression bug. You must *RMUnplug ZLib from the ROM if you wish to save/image JFD files
Iyonix requirements
  • RISC OS 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer
  • To get legacy TV MODEs working (0 to 15), you can try this Monitor file for 75Hz EGA on VGA

Pi requirements:
  • Any revision Pi, from Pi 1 to Pi 3 Model B, including Pi Zero
  • RISC OS 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer
  • AnyMode must be installed in !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk or the monitor set to Auto in Configure
  • Ensure fake_vsync_isr=1 is uncommented in !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT
  • If you're running a ROM build of 14th Dec 2016 or newer you must disable GPU mode change support by creating !Boot.Loader.CMDLINE/TXT with the following contents:

  • (optional) For the proper retro gaming look, you can turn off the default GPU filtered upscaling by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and add the following lines:

  • (optional) If your display supports 50Hz, you can force the Pi to use 50Hz by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and adding the following lines. Uncomment one of the hdmi_mode values:

    At other monitor frequencies, games will still run at the correct rate but micro stutter may be noticeable where extra frames are added to make up the difference

Known issues
  • Does not support the protection used by Chequered Flag (RO2 version) when running on RISC OS 3.1x (talks directly to the FDC via IOC)
  • Shelling out of the desktop (Ctrl-Shift-F12 twice) hangs if an HD floppy is mounted on RO3.5+ ARM710 under RedSquirrel
  • Although Caverns runs fine under VIDC translation on the A7000, on a RiscPC the scrolling isn't quite correct
  • Some games don't display on Kinetic (eg Zarch)
  • OMAP based cores are untested and may not work
  • Some games that use overscan may result in a blank screen on a RiscPC
  • Manchester United, the prompt to swap to disk 2 can be hard to see without holding SHIFT

Changes since 2.63:
  • removed internal SWI's from SWI table
  • ADFFS Filer converted to extASM
  • ADFFS Filer wasn't checking for DragASprite correctly
  • Format was setting the mounted image type to ADF
  • ADFFS_DiscOp added to allow DiscOp's to the physical floppy when an image is mounted
  • ADFFS Filer Image floppy options added
  • ADFFS_Save was assuming R12 pointed to the private word
  • ADF / JFD imaging adding
  • Save As and Flush now work for JFD images
  • Loaded APD's can now be saved as JFD files
  • JIT Squash_Decompress now hypervised (fixes botkiller 2)
  • MiscOp 1 now returns 'maybe changed' while not recording and only returns 'changed' if the disc image changes
  • JIT OS_File 12/14/16/255 weren't presuming a load address of &8000 if an Absolute is loaded without specifying a load address in R2
  • moved MemAlloc sub Module into ADFFS, so it's killed/loaded with ADFFS

Bug fix:Imaging 1.6M floppies to ADF results in a corrupt file. This can be fixed by editing !ADFFS.imaging.imageADF and changing the FOR loop on line 43 from:

NOTE: You must use "Boot floppy" to run supported games. If you don't, you could end up with a machine that isn't bootable, as some games alter the CMOS. Provided "Boot floppy" is used, ADFFS will prevent games from altering both the CMOS and unplugging modules.
DO NOT try to run a game by launching it's Icon - it will almost certainly damage your machine.

Hi Jon!
The "don't prompt" is a very good addition. I have been doing some light test (will test this to hell on sunday morning) and, while Flashback and Alone In The Dark don't show protection screens anymore with updated scripts, Simon The Sorcerer still does. That's expected, as you say "most", not "all".
Also, since we have CD Faker now, wouldn't it be a way to "modify" Alone in The Dark so it uses the PC-CDROM music tracks? (God, it's such a crazy thing to ask, I know!) :D

Bare in mind that I didn't play test any of the games to see if there's a knock on effect. Hopefully not, but you never know if there's a cheeky check somewhere that notices the protection has been bypassed.

while Flashback and Alone In The Dark don't show protection screens anymore with updated scripts, Simon The Sorcerer still does.
It's not so easy to bypass the protection prompt as if I remember correctly, its hooked to an IRQ vector. The check is however ignored, so you only have to click the mouse a few times to get past it.

Modifying the code to play CD-Audio is probably easy enough, which track to play and when to play it is more of an issue. At the point the game code is called for the last time in the boot script, it's possible to dump the code if you wanted to play around with it.

I had Alone in the Dark on PC, but don't recall any CD-Audio. I vaguely remember voice acting being added at some point, possibly via a patch.

@Jon: I understand about Simon, it's ok as it is. I have to finish FB and Alone to get sure nothing is wrong, but I got far on both and didn't see any side effects.

Also, is Wonderland still not HDD-installable? I still get the Mad Hatter picture, and then.. back to desktop.

Other game with a small problem is Iron Lord: when trying to copy !Iron from the floppy image, I get a disc read error. Anyway, overwritting the !Run script with the one in the Obey file DOES make it work, but I am not sure it the disk read error is supposed to happen...

Also, trying to run Fireball II after Iron Lord results on Fireball II hanging on the tittle screen. So I believe Iron Lord isn't doing house cleaning :D

It's on the list to look at, currently it does not work when HD installed.

It's a bad image which was cobbled together from several bad images to get a "sort of working" image. We need someone to reimage it.

I know I've asked before so this'll be the last time for a while!

I'd be very happy to help test the alpha and beta releases of each new version. Not only do I have a fairly wide range of machines which I use on an almost daily basis - StrongARM RISC PC with 4.02 in ROM and softload up to 6.20, but 4.39 is default with release one Acorn/Aleph1 486 card 2MB VRAM 50MB RAM 40GB spinning rust hard drive iCubed600 10Mbps NIC and an IDE DVD-ROM or Panasonic slot loaded 4x CD-ROM; an ARM610 RISC PC with 12MB RAM no VRAM no 486 card the internal IDE interface is damaged so unplugged (pin missing from MOBO connector) so I have an Acorn v1 16-bit SCSI card with 2GB CF card and a Panasonic original 2x CD-ROM with the required daughterboard converter, a RaspberryPi 3 running RISC OS 5.24 beta, a Raspberry Pi 2 running RISC OS 5.22 stable and an Adelaide A3010 running the ARM2/VIDC/IOMD daughterboard with 4MB earlier Simtec RAM RISC OS 3.10 (not 3.11) in ROM and either a Castle IDE minipodule interface with 2x 512MB CF cards as drives or it's swapped out and I use an iCubed200 10base2 mini-podule to network boot from the StrongARM RISC PC.

I also use the pukka VirtualAcorn RISC PC daily and the earlier cheaper versions of VIrtualA5000 and VirtualRPC along with rpc_EMU and Arculator.

You have to have plenty of spare time for testing, unfortunately just about every tester that's joined the project to date has done little or in most cases, no testing, so I'm very reluctant to let anyone else join at the moment.

In future, I think people are going to have to prove they're willing to test by testing the publicly available games for a period, before I let them anywhere near the dev server. People that have signed up to perform testing and subsequently not done any, will find their access revoked.
I made 2.64 beta publicly available to see if anyone came forward to test, but received little in the way of feedback. I ended up doing most, if not all of the testing myself. Admittedly the update was around imaging and minor bug fixes, but even minor additions can have huge knock on effects. For example, just prior to 2.64 going live, I merged the MemAlloc stub Module into ADFFS so it could load/die with ADFFS. That completely broke most games, not because anything was wrong with the code I added, but due possibly to a compiler bug.

Unfortunately, there's no real requirement for testing at the moment as I'm taking a break from ADFFS development, to concentrate on doing more archiving and ARMv7 conversion work that's been neglected for years.

What would be useful is people willing to join the project to track down and put me in touch with copyright holders, so we can seek permission to make more games publicly available. Putting titles owned by APDL aside, there are plenty we still need to track down.

Hi Jon,

Zip attached with a potential bug.

It contains two ADFs of a 1.6MB "F" floppy containing the Cumana Parallel Port CD drivers and CDFS.

The ADFFS created image will not open when loaded as Filecore does not understand the disc.

The second ADF image was created with !ADFimager v1.00 by Douglas McKenzie of the same source disc. This ADF will load correctly with ADFFS and also write back to disc.

The file sizes look the same, so I'm not sure what ADFFS is doing differently to foul up the image compared to !ADFimager.

I had have a similar problem with the beta of 1.64 with any physical floppy that was imaged. In the end I had to keep going back to !ADFimager for that and then load into memory using !ADFFS. Most of the problems seem to have been solved, but imaging 1.6MB "F" floppies is very hit and miss.

It's the staggered sector order causing the issue. Details on the fix are at the bottom of the OP.
