How to image a floppy disc with ADFFS

Post by JonAbbott »

You can image to an ADF file via Image floppy\Image as ADF from the ADFFS Filer. Once imaged the ADF file should be saved via Save as from the ADFFS Filer menu.

To image protected titles to a JFD file, use the following process:

Recording files are now bundled with ADFFS. To make use of them, skip to the Imaging section below. By using the inbuilt recordings, you can image floppies on any machine that has a floppy drive, including the Iyonix.

No support is given for images made using these recordings and bare in mind, if the floppies you're trying to image weren't generated with a floppy imager or are a different version to the copy archived by JASPP, they may not image correctly.

Creating your own recording file

If there's no inbuilt recording file, or the inbuilt recording file didn't work with your version of the game, a new recording file can be created:
  1. Clean boot the machine. This will ensure the floppy has not been seen by ADFS and free any allocated memory
  2. Load !ADFFS
  3. Press F12 to go to the Commandline
  4. *ADFRecord adfs::4.$.recording
  5. Press RETURN to go back to the desktop
  6. Insert the floppy and copy all files to a temporary folder on your harddisc or RAM:. You may delete them as soon as the copy has finished, this step ensures all files are seen by ADFFS
  7. This step is for Disc 1 only: Run the game and wait until its fully loaded or prompts for another disc
  8. Press SHIFT-CTRL-F10 to stop recording

Imaging using an existing recording file

Requirements: At least 1056K Free memory for a DD floppy or 1856K for HD
  1. Select Image floppy/Image as JFD from the ADFFS Filer
  2. Select the title of the game using the Title drop-down menu, optionally type the first few letters of the title to restrict the list:

  3. Most fields will be automatically filled, ensure the correct Disc number is selected when imaging a game with more than one floppy:
    title_selected.png
    title_selected.png (13.4 KiB) Viewed 17452 times
  4. A default recording file will be automatically selected. If you’ve previously created your own recording file, drag/drop it onto the window to use it for imaging
  5. Drag/drop the Save JFD As icon to the folder you’d like to save the JFD file to on the harddisc
  6. Click OK to start the imaging process:

Once imaged, the floppy image will be compressed and saved. Please note that some protection sectors may show as Bad and that tracks 160 to 165 (the grey tracks in the image above) will only be imaged if the floppy uses extended tracks.
NOTE: Imaged floppies are for personal use only, any games imaged with ADFFS are covered by copyright and must not be distributed.
