ADFFS 2.61

Post by JonAbbott »

This build contains fixes to both game boot scripts and ADFFS to resolve many of the outstanding game issues; Bubble Impact and Morph no longer flicker, there's now sound in Blaston (UCS) and Worldclass Leaderboard and Asylum now run at the correct speed. If you've previously installed any games to hard disc using the ADFFS boot scripts, they may have been updated and require replacing.

The major change in this release is to BASIC programs running under the JIT; a localized 26 bit version is used within the JIT when a managed task loads a BASIC program. This removes the requirement to patch BASIC when the JIT starts, future proofing against code changes within the ROM based BASIC Module.

Additional games that now work on the Pi:
Ballarena (Sisteme), Break 147 & Superpool, Bug Hunter & Moondash, Champions (Krisalis Software), Chocks Away Compendium [SA version], Flying High, Humanoids and Robotix, Master Break, Memory Magic (1990), MicroDrive, MicroDrive World Edition, OddBall, Omar Sharif's Bridge, Plague Planet, Put It!, Saloon Cars, Software 42 Collection: Raw Power, Stunt Racer 2000 [SA version], Syndicate+, Tactic (Eterna), WolfPack, WorldScape [pre-release v0.91], X-Run, Zalaga
A305/A301/A410/A440/A540 requirements:
  • 4MB RAM minimum, 12MB RAM maximum
  • RISCOS 3.11
  • SparkFS must be loaded if "Boot Floppy" is going to be used
RiscPC requirements:
  • 32MB RAM minimum
  • RISC OS 3.x, 4.x or 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer. Note that some games will not work on 4.x due to the way it allocates screen memory in 1MB blocks
  • SparkFS must be loaded
Iyonix requirements
  • RISC OS 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer (must be High Vector, use a Nightly beta build. Do not use RC15)
  • SparkFS must be loaded
  • To get legacy TV MODEs working (0 to 15), you can try this Monitor file for 75Hz EGA on VGA
    EGAonVGAMonitor.zip
    (698 Bytes) Downloaded 3727 times
Pi requirements:
  • Any revision Pi, from Pi 1 to Pi 3 Model B, including Pi Zero
  • RISC OS 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer (must be High Vector, use a Nightly beta build. Do not use RC15)
  • SparkFS must be loaded (it's included in the OS SD image)
  • AnyMode must be installed in !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk or the monitor set to Auto in Configure
  • Ensure fake_vsync_isr=1 is uncommented in !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT
  • If you're running a ROM build of 14th Dec 2016 or newer you must disable GPU mode change support by creating !Boot.Loader.CMDLINE/TXT with the following contents:

    Code: Select all

    disable_mode_changes
  • (optional) For the proper retro gaming look, you can turn off the default GPU filtered upscaling by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and add the following lines:

    Code: Select all

#set GPU upscaling to nearest neighbour
    scaling_kernel=8
  • (optional) If your display supports 50Hz, you can force the Pi to use 50Hz by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and adding the following lines. Uncomment one of the hdmi_mode values:

    Code: Select all

    hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
    #
    hdmi_group=1
    #576p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=17
    #
    #720p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=19
    #
    #1080p @ 50Hz
    hdmi_mode=31
At other monitor frequencies, games will still run at the correct rate but micro stutter may be noticeable where extra frames are added to make up the difference

Known issues
  • Does not support the protection used by Chequered Flag (RO2 version), Bubble Fair (Eterna), Fine Racer (Eterna) and KerBang! (Eterna) when running on RISC OS 3.1x (they talk directly to the FDC via IOC)
  • Shelling out of the desktop (Ctrl-Shift-F12 twice) hangs if an HD floppy is mounted on RO3.5+ ARM710 under RedSquirrel
  • Although Caverns runs fine under VIDC translation on the A7000, on a RiscPC the scrolling isn't quite correct
  • Does not work on a RISC OS 3.1x machine with more than 12mb of RAM
  • Some games don't display on Kinetic (eg Zarch)
  • OMAP based cores are untested and may not work
  • Some games that use overscan may result in a blank screen on a RiscPC
  • Rockfall will crash if left on the demo loop when run on a ARM600 or newer
  • Wolfenstein 3D, can't turn in-game music on when run on StrongArm or newer
  • Manchester United, the prompt to swap to disk 2 can be hard to see without holding SHIFT

Changes since 2.60:
  • Wasn't disabling IRQ/FIQ when detecting the CPU on ARM2/3
  • Display_DiscOpValues wasn't working
  • IOC IR / IF pins weren't being set correctly
  • IOC IR pin is now brought low 1cs after going high (fixes Tactic V2)
  • Service_PreModeChange no longer unmaps screen memory for supported modes (fixes Rockfall, which uses video memory for sound DMA)
  • GOARM3JIT now sets CAO to point at ADFFS to prevent "Module is active" errors when terminating tasks
  • JIT wasn't clearing down Module fixups when shutting down
  • Service_PreModeChange now checks for mode pointers using resolutions of 640x480x8bp or lower and assumes they're legacy requests (fixes flickering in Bubble Impact and Morph)
  • JIT dynamically loads localized 26bit BASIC Module and 32bitted BASICTrans when BASIC Module is entered
  • JIT Errors generated during loading of 26bit Modules would always return "No room in RMA" instead of the actual error
  • JIT removed unnesessary code from 26bit Module Run entry
  • JIT Error handler wasn't releasing handlers in SVC
  • JIT Exit handler wasn't releasing handlers before passing on
  • On 26bit IOMD, SWI's using pass_SWI_on weren't switching to SVC32 before calling SWI dispatch
  • JIT wasn't clearing down JITMEMORYA buffers when shutting down
  • JIT OS_File now explicitly clears the JIT codelet cache
  • JIT 26bit Modules with non-aligned Command table starts would generate unaligned entry points in the 32bit stub Module (fixes Bug Hunter & Moondash)
  • JIT OS_Byte 129 no longer preserves C, as single key checks clear or set C if the key is up or down respectively (fixes Humanoids and Robotix)
  • _find_MODE wasn't returning EQ for custom MODE numbers (fixes Raw Power)
  • entry_GraphicsV was passing calls on when a custom MODE was in use (fixes Raw Power)
  • Null dereference in release_ChangeEnvironmentV
  • Moved code that sets GraphicsV 8 default values to remapvideomemory
  • Service_ModeExtension wasn't setting VIDC20 registers for type 3 (disabled, as it's breaking Lemmings 2, Rockfall and Gribbly's Day Out)
  • GraphicsV driver now installs when the Module loads, to allow switching to 1/2/4bpp MODE's to work first time
  • JIT OS_Module 10 wasn't allocating a sensible stub Module Heap block (fixes Raw Power)
  • JIT OS_ReadLine now locally stores SPSR around the OS_ReadLine32 call (fixes Master Break)
  • JIT 50hz ticker is now generated 1cs out of phase with the actual Vsync, to ensure we don't skip Vsyncs on a 50hz monitor
  • JIT claim_ChangeEnvironmentV wasn't checking if the handler was already pointing at ADFFS, before claiming
  • Service_ModeExtension wasn't forcing Monitor type 0 when reissuing the call to find VIDC type 0/1 mode extensions (fixes RawPower MODE 99 when emulating RISCOS 3.11)
  • JIT OS_Byte 13 / 14 weren't forwarding to the OS on IOC / IOMD
  • GOARM3JIT wasn't calling shutdown_interrupts when shutting down the JIT, potentially leaving rogue handlers and not RMReIniting the stock voices
  • JIT LDMxx Rn,{<reglist>,PC} reencoding now 2 instructions shorter if <reglist> contains the working register and Rn<>working register
  • Claim_ChannelHandler now checks if Sound_Configure has returned an invalid Channel Handler (occurs when SoundDMA is reinitialised)
  • Now reclaims the Channel Handler when SoundDMA is reinitialised
  • report_abort wasn't performing serious error recovery
  • JIT now resets function key interpretation
  • JIT CTRL-SHIFT-F12 was leaving the blitter paused

NOTE: You must have !SparkFS loaded and use "Boot floppy" to run a game. If you don't, you could end up with a machine that isn't bootable, as some games try to alter the CMOS. Provided "Boot floppy" is used, ADFFS will prevent games from altering both the CMOS and unplugging modules.
DO NOT try to run a game by launching it's Icon - it will almost certainly damage your machine.
