Post by JonAbbott »

Available below as an attachment for non-networked/pre RiscPC machines, or via PackMan using the source URL: http://www.jaspp.org.uk/packages/release

This build adds StrongARM translation to the JIT, enabling StrongARM compatible games to run at near native CPU speed. It also includes general bug fixes and additions. The full change log is detailed below, some highlights include:
  • ADFFSFiler is now RISC OS 4 compatible
  • Writing to DOS/Atari format floppy images now works
  • Core StrongARM emulation added to the JIT
  • Workaround added for a long standing bug in RISC OS, introduced in RISC OS 3.60 that causes disc changes to not be detected by the OS
  • Compressed AIF files are now patched to be StrongARM compatible
  • Bugfixes/improvements to codelets, reducing ALU temp variables required from 4 to 3
  • A bug fixed version of VProtect is included, which is automatically loaded if an older version of VProtect is running
  • The JIT should now run most games on IOMD
  • Will now kill and replace ZLib on RISC OS Select as it has some showstopping bugs

A305/A301/A410/A440/A540 requirements:
  • 4MB RAM minimum, 12MB RAM maximum
  • RISC OS 3.10
  • ADFFS must be installed to a hard-drive
RiscPC requirements:
  • 32MB RAM minimum
  • RISC OS 3.x, 4.x or 5.23 Jun 9th 2016 or newer. Note that some games will not work on 4.x due to the way it allocates screen memory in 1MB blocks
Iyonix requirements
  • RISC OS 5.27 Nov 16th 2018 or newer
  • To get legacy TV MODEs working (0 to 15), you can try this Monitor file for 75Hz EGA on VGA
    EGAonVGAMonitor.zip
Pi requirements:
  • Any revision Pi, from Pi 1 to Pi 3 Model B+, including Pi Zero
  • RISC OS 5.27 Nov 16th 2018 or newer (download link for latest Beta RPi ROM)
  • Ensure fake_vsync_isr=1 is uncommented in !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT
  • You must disable GPU mode change support using the applicable method below:

    Non-NOOBS RISC OS:
    1. Hold SHIFT and browse to !Boot.Loader from the root of the drive
    2. Create CMDLINE/TXT with the following contents:

      Code: Select all

      disable_mode_changes
    NOOBS RISC OS:
    1. Hold SHIFT at power on to enter the NOOBS configuration
    2. Select Edit Config
    3. Add the following to CMDLINE.TXT:

      Code: Select all

      disable_mode_changes
  • (optional) For a blocky pixel retro gaming look, turn off the default GPU filtered upscaling by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and add the following lines:

    Code: Select all

#set GPU upscaling to nearest neighbour
    scaling_kernel=8
  • (optional) If your display supports 50Hz, you can force the Pi to use 50Hz by editing !Boot.Loader.CONFIG/TXT and adding the following lines. Uncomment one of the hdmi_mode values:

    Code: Select all

    hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
    #
    hdmi_group=1
    #576p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=17
    #
    #720p @ 50Hz
    #hdmi_mode=19
    #
    #1080p @ 50Hz
    hdmi_mode=31
At other monitor frequencies, games will still run at the correct rate but micro stutter may be noticeable where extra frames are added to make up the difference

Known issues
  • Does not support the protection used by Chequered Flag (RO2 version) when running on RISC OS 3.1x (talks directly to the FDC via IOC)
  • Shelling out of the desktop (Ctrl-Shift-F12 twice) hangs under RedSquirrel if an HD floppy is mounted on RO3.5+ ARM710
  • Although Caverns runs fine under VIDC translation on the A7000, on a RiscPC the scrolling isn't quite correct
  • OMAP based cores are untested and may not work
  • Some games that use overscan may result in a blank screen on a RiscPC
  • 26bit WIMP app support under RISC OS 5 can randomly lock the machine (related to a feature of RISC OS, which doesn't preserve memory page access across a task switches)
  • Hardware scrolling is still in effect when returning from an emulated legacy mode, to the desktop under RISC OS 5
  • When switching between an emulated mode and the desktop, logical memory space is leaked eventually resulting in logical memory exhaustion. Please refer to the ROOL discussion for further details
  • Cache flushing is not performed at VSync on StrongARM based RiscPC,, resulting in flickering

Changes since 2.72:
  • ADFFSFiler Service table wasn't terminated correctly
  • Updated VoxLib to 1.07
  • Changed !Run to only load CLib if its both out of date and not already running
  • DiscOp 2 no longer alters the Sequence no (fixes writing to DOS/Atari format floppies)
  • ARMv4 JIT support added via *GOARM4JIT
  • JIT STR PC, ... and STM Rn, {...PC} store PC+8 when in ARMv4 mode
  • OS_SynchroniseCodeAreas all memory sync not ignored when in ARMv4 mode
  • JIT hv_reset_memory_block now disables IRQ/FIQ when reseting memory ranges
  • JIT hv_reset_memory_block would clear 128 bytes of JIT memory if the requested block size was below 128 bytes
  • ADF code wasn't setting ADF_Changed if the mount failed
  • MiscOp 1 now always returns "Maybe changed" for RISC OS 3.60+ due to a bug introduced after RISC OS 3.50 that causes disc changes to not be detected
  • ADFCache added to flush the JIT cache and enable self-modifying code support when in ARMv4 mode
  • OS_FSControl 4 now implements the UnSqzAIF fixup code, to correct compressed AIF that aren't StrongArm compatible
  • Debug mode now checks the JIT cache consistency against instructions in main memory and the RMA when running in ARMv4 mode and reports any mismatches
  • LDMIA R13!,{PC} is now switched to LDR PC,[R13],#4 regardless of the condition, previously only the AL condition was handled
  • JIT ALU instructions rewritten to only require 3 tmp variables, IRQ handler modified to cache 3 tmp variable
  • JIT OS_FSControl _utility_return was missing a NOP after an LDM Rx,{}^ in the IOMD builds
  • JIT now redirects VProtect OS_Module 6 (Claim) to the JIT RMA when VProtect handles a Module load or run (fixes Magnetoids)
  • ADFFS now updates VProtect to the latest version if it's already running
  • JIT Allocate_Transient_Stack was changing the CPU mode instead of disabling IRQ/FIQ (bug introduced in 2.71b)
  • JIT call_module_entry was missing a NOP after an LDM Rx,{}^ in the IOMD builds
  • map_screen_memory was corrupting R3 (L2PT address)
  • map_screen_memory was not turning off screen caching on StrongARM if the screen memory wasn't remapped
  • Claim_DataAbort_Vector was reenabling screen caching on IOMD
  • JIT IRQ handler was setting flags in R14 before calling the existing IRQ handler, which causes RISC OS 3.8+ to return to the wrong location
  • JIT IRQ handler now uses the existing IRQ32 stack instead of a temporary one
  • Modified code that gets the IRQ stack base to use a legitimate call on ROL OS builds
  • FSControl_Exit_handler wasn't preserving R0-R2 when passing on to the next Exit handler
  • Now RMKill's ZLib on RISC OS Select and installs the ROOL version
  • SetVars and ADFFS weren't checking for RISC OS 6 correctly
  • ADFRemapVideoMemory now reports an error under RISC OS 6
  • SWI handler exit code wasn't checking for a 32bit OS correctly
  • setup_screen_registers wasn't aligning L1/L2PT pointers
  • map_screen_memory wasn't resetting the screen domain when re-enabling caching on RISC OS 3.8-4.x (fixes lockup on RISC OS 3.8)
  • map_screen_memory was turning off caching on DA2 under RISC OS 5
  • OS_ChangeDynamicArea was not unmapping RO3.1 screen memory if caching was manually disabled on StrongARM
  • ADFRemapVideoMemory wasn't clearing the RO3.1 screen mapping before marking it as unmapped
  • mode_translation_table had an incorrect bpp for MODE 3
  • _pre_mode_change was not unmapping RO3.1 screen memory
  • _Early_Abort_Check no longer sets the 32bit Abort stack
  • changed ADFRemapVideoMemory to do an additional mode change on IOMD before taking over the Abort vector, to prevent hangs when the current desktop resolution is high
  • ADFRemapVideoMemory wasn't increasing the version of RISC OS being emulated when turning off RISC OS 3.11 video memory emulation
  • ADFRemapVideoMemory wasn't removing the current task from the supported task list
  • OS_ChangeDynamicArea wasn't checking if the current task was supported (fixes crash when returning to the desktop with large screen res)
  • JIT hv_OS_CallASWI/hv_OS_CallASWIR12 reinstated from 2.72c and CODELET_CALLASWI reinstated from 2.71i (fixes crash when Abuse calls OS_WimpPoll via OS_CallASWI)
  • JIT abort_handler now checks for unaligned LDR occuring in LDM replacement codelets (fixes Pocket Money demo on ARMv5+)

NOTE: On RISC OS 3.5+ use the PackMan distribution to receive automatic updates.

NOTE: You must use "Boot floppy" to run supported games. If you don't, you could end up with a machine that isn't bootable, as some games alter the CMOS. Provided "Boot floppy" is used, ADFFS will prevent games from altering both the CMOS and unplugging modules.
DO NOT try to run a game by launching it's Icon - it will almost certainly damage your machine.

Re: ADFFS 2.73

@Jon, I have been doing some extensive testing these days and I have found some small problems:

-James Pond II +: Copy protection seems to be kicking-in, because all that can be played is the DEMO level, once I get the two penguins at the end of the level and touch the pole, I am back in the same level again and again-

-Alone in the Dark: The game seems to be letter-boxed. Is there a way to force a "taller" aspect ratio, please?

This is resolved with the latest game package. It needs the floppy mounted to run.

This is a lot more work to resolve as the MODE the game is using will need altering, possibly requiring a custom resolution. The game is a straight port from PC with a 200 pixel vertical resolution, but is running in a 256 vertical pixel MODE, hence the letterbox. A lot of ports will suffer the same issue.

@Jon: Yes, James Pond 2+ works as expected now, but the new package is missing it's icon! The generic one is shown instead.

About "Alone In the Dark", the game seems to be a 320x200 DOS port, yes :(
Maybe it's possible to add an option for "stretching" as you said. As a hack, so to say.

It would appear I forgot to copy !Sprites into the app folder, I'll correct the package soon.

@Jon: I have found out that Simon the Sorcerer has a couple of problems:
-It's stuck on a black screen on quit via CTRL+SHIFT+F12.
-Its cursor is VERY big, too big in fact. Maybe that's expected?

I have also found problems when quitting in:
-Lemmings: Quitting via "back to desktop" in the game's main menu shows an error window saying just "ESC". Quitting via CTRL+SHIFT+F12 quits OK.
-Oh No! More Lemmings: Quitting via CTRL+SHIFT+F12 shows an error. Quitting via "back to desktop" in the game's main menu is OK.

This looks like it might be an issue with the game's Exit handler, I'll need to do some debugging.

I've been unable to reproduce this issue.

This also appears to be an issue with the game's Exit handler.
